Maths fear is something that has followed me throughout my teens and early twenties. I remember turning 13 and realising I would have to start learning Algebra. I put it off as much as I could. It seemed like a mountain I had to climb and didn't know how to.
I think a lot of it goes down to being taught by someone who not only loves maths but has a gift in teaching. I think it starts from an early age. But the more you put off tackling your fear of maths the harder it gets.
Tackling my maths anxiety would have had very positive effects on other subjects. Confidence in maths affects your confidence as a student overall.
It’s good to read your story Sam. It makes me wonder how many people have a fear of maths but don’t talk to others about it. Was it something you used to discuss with people or did you just keep it to yourself?
